France reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals after beating Paraguay 1-0. Kylian Mbappé scored the winning goal from the penalty spot. However, the match became famous for its controversial refereeing instead of the result.
Paraguay played a very physical game from start to finish. The team made 29 tackles and committed 13 fouls. Even so, they finished the match without a single yellow card. That decision surprised fans, players, and football experts around the world.

France Face a Physical Challenge
France entered the Round of 16 as one of the favorites to win the tournament. The team had looked strong in the group stage. However, Paraguay made life difficult from the opening whistle.
The South American side pressed hard. They also challenged every loose ball. As a result, France struggled to control the game.
Mbappé received close attention all night. Every time he touched the ball, one or two defenders closed him down. In addition, several hard tackles stopped France from building attacks.
France enjoyed more possession. However, they created only a few clear chances in the first half. Meanwhile, Paraguay stayed organized and waited for counterattacks.
Paraguay Avoid Any Cards
As the game continued, Paraguay became even more aggressive. The team finished with 29 tackles and 13 fouls. Yet referee Ilgiz Tantashev never showed a yellow card. That statistic quickly became the biggest talking point after the match.
Normally, a team that commits so many fouls receives at least one booking. Therefore, many fans questioned the referee’s decisions.
France, on the other hand, received three yellow cards. This happened even though Les Bleus made far fewer tackles than Paraguay.
Because of that, criticism grew throughout the second half.

Mbappé Receives Heavy Challenges
Mbappé was the main target of Paraguay’s defenders. The French captain spent much of the match on the ground after strong tackles. Even so, he continued to attack whenever he had the chance. The biggest controversy came in the 78th minute.
Mbappé collided with Juan José Cáceres. He pushed the defender to the ground after the challenge. While lying on the pitch, Cáceres swung his leg and appeared to kick Mbappé’s shin with the bottom of his boot.
Many fans immediately remembered David Beckham’s famous red card at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
However, this time the referee did nothing. Even more surprising, VAR also stayed silent.
As a result, the incident quickly spread across social media.

Experts Criticize the Referee
Several football experts questioned the referee after the final whistle. BBC commentator Steve Wilson said he could not understand the decision. He pointed out that Beckham received a red card for a similar action in 1998.
Former England defender Stephen Warnock also criticized Paraguay’s style. He said there is a clear difference between playing hard and trying to hurt opponents. In his opinion, Paraguay crossed that line several times.
Meanwhile, fans shared thousands of comments online. Many believed Cáceres should have received a straight red card. Others called it one of the worst refereeing performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

VAR Finally Helps France
Despite the earlier controversy, VAR later helped France. Late in the match, Désiré Doué went down inside the penalty area. At first, the referee allowed play to continue. However, VAR asked him to review the incident.

After watching the replay, the referee awarded France a penalty. Mbappé stepped up with confidence. He calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and scored the only goal of the match.
That goal secured a 1-0 victory and sent France into the quarterfinals.

Mbappé Keeps Scoring
Mbappé once again showed why he is one of the world’s best players.
Although he faced constant fouls, he stayed focused until the end. His penalty gave him seven goals at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Therefore, he remained one of the favorites to win the Golden Boot.
More importantly, he helped France survive a difficult knockout match.

France Move On but Questions Remain
France celebrated another important victory. The team will now face Morocco in the quarterfinals. Still, the result was not the biggest story.
Instead, most people talked about the referee and Paraguay’s physical style. Many fans could not understand how Paraguay finished the game without a single yellow card after making 29 tackles and committing 13 fouls. The incident involving Cáceres and Mbappé also raised more questions about the use of VAR.
Even so, France stayed calm when it mattered most. Mbappé scored the decisive goal. The defense held firm. As a result, Les Bleus moved one step closer to the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy.
