Kha Y Tran Canada made history with a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Stephen Eustaquio scored the winning goal in stoppage time. As a result, Canada reached the quarterfinals for the first time.
The match was played at SoFi Stadium in California on June 28. Although Canada is one of the tournament’s hosts, the team had to play in the United States after finishing second in its group.
It was also the first World Cup knockout match for both nations. Therefore, both teams were eager to make history.

Canada controlled the match
Canada started on the front foot. The team kept the ball and attacked from the opening minutes.
Meanwhile, South Africa defended deep. They stayed compact and looked for chances on the counterattack.
Canada created its first clear chance in the 22nd minute. Derek Cornelius headed the ball from an Eustaquio free kick. However, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a comfortable save.

Williams kept South Africa alive
Canada almost scored before halftime. Moise Bombito headed toward goal from a corner. Aubrey Modiba cleared the ball off the line. Soon after, Tajon Buchanan fired the rebound. Once again, Williams made an important stop.
Just before the break, Richie Laryea went down inside the box. Canada appealed for a penalty. However, the referee allowed play to continue. VAR also supported the decision.
Even so, Canada stayed calm. The team kept attacking after halftime.

South Africa fought hard
South Africa defended with discipline. Ime Okon and Mbokazi blocked several dangerous attacks. They also cleared many crosses into the box.
Whenever Canada broke through, Williams was ready. The veteran goalkeeper made several key saves. He also completed 77 passes during the match.
That number set a new World Cup record for a goalkeeper. The previous mark belonged to Manuel Neuer, who completed 51 passes in 2022.

Davies gave Canada new energy
Jesse Marsch made an important change in the second half. He brought on Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute.
Davies immediately increased Canada’s speed. His runs stretched South Africa’s defense. As a result, Canada found more space near the penalty area.
Although Davies did not score, he changed the rhythm of the game.
Eustaquio decided the match
The winning goal came in stoppage time. South Africa failed to clear the ball. Eustaquio controlled it with his chest. He then hit a low volley into the bottom corner.
Williams could not stop the shot. The goal sparked huge celebrations among Canadian fans.
Eustaquio deserved the moment. He controlled the midfield all game. He also delivered dangerous set pieces from start to finish.

A record-breaking performance
The goal was important for another reason.
Eustaquio became only the third MLS player to score in a World Cup knockout match. He joined Landon Donovan and Brian McBride on that short list.
Moreover, he created five chances from set pieces.
Only Andrea Pirlo had done that before in a World Cup knockout match. Pirlo achieved the feat for Italy against Germany in 2006.
Canada deserved to win
The statistics showed Canada’s dominance. Canada finished with 12 shots. South Africa managed only six.
Canada also had seven shots on target. South Africa had just one. The expected goals told the same story.
Canada posted an xG of 1.32. Meanwhile, South Africa recorded only 0.13. These numbers showed that Canada created the better chances throughout the match.
Canada continue their dream run
Jesse Marsch has built a confident and organized team. Canada now relies on more than just Alphonso Davies. Players like Eustaquio, Buchanan, Bombito and Niko Sigur have become key contributors. That balance makes Canada much harder to stop.
This historic win gives the team even more confidence. The quarterfinals are the next challenge. However, Canada now believes it can compete with anyone.
If Eustaquio keeps playing at this level, Canada’s World Cup dream could continue much longer.
