Portugal Settle for Second at World Cup 2026

Portugal drew 0-0 with Colombia in their final Group K match at the World Cup 2026. Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score. As a result, Portugal finished second in the group.

Colombia took first place. They played with more energy and created more chances. However, they also failed to find the net. The match ended without a goal. Even so, it was fast, open, and full of action.

Colombia Make a Bright Start

Colombia attacked from the first minute. Luis Diaz quickly caused problems on the left side. Soon after, Jhon Cordoba almost scored. His header went just wide of the post.

James Rodriguez also had an early chance. He received the ball outside the box and aimed for the far corner. However, his shot missed the target.

Portugal found it hard to control the game. Colombia pressed high and forced quick passes. Therefore, Portugal often lost the ball before reaching the final third.

Bruno Fernandes tried to respond with a shot from distance. The ball went wide, but it gave Portugal some hope.

Ronaldo Has a Frustrating Night

Ronaldo found it difficult to influence the game. Colombia defended well and stayed close to him all night.

Often, the Portuguese captain dropped into midfield to receive the ball. Even then, Colombia quickly closed him down.

His first shot came from a free kick. However, goalkeeper Camilo Vargas saved it comfortably.

Later, Ronaldo came close after Bruno Fernandes forced a save. He tried an overhead kick from the rebound. Unfortunately, a Colombian defender blocked the effort.

Portugal Miss Their Best Chances

Portugal created several good chances before halftime.

First, João Félix controlled the ball well inside the box. However, he lifted his shot over the crossbar. Soon after, Bruno Fernandes tested Vargas again. The goalkeeper made another important save. Ronaldo reacted quickly to the loose ball. Yet Colombia’s defense cleared the danger once more.

At the other end, James Rodriguez also tested Diogo Costa with a powerful long-range strike. Costa stayed alert and pushed the ball away. Therefore, both teams went into halftime level at 0-0.

Colombia Stay on Top

The second half remained open. Both teams continued to attack. Portugal made changes early. Diogo Dalot and João Neves entered the match. Later, Rafael Leão and Samu Costa also came on.

Even so, Colombia continued to create better chances. Substitute Richard Ríos missed one of the best opportunities of the match. Santiago Arias delivered a perfect cross. However, Ríos placed his shot wide.

Soon after, Luis Suarez and John Arias both threatened Portugal’s goal. Thankfully for Portugal, Diogo Costa made several important saves.

Meanwhile, Colombia appealed for a penalty after Luis Suarez went down in the area. The referee waved play on.

In stoppage time, Colombia thought they had scored. Carlos Sanchez headed the ball into the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Portugal also had one final chance. Rafael Leão beat his defender with pace before shooting wide. Soon after, the referee ended the match.

Colombia Finish First

The draw confirmed the final Group K standings. Colombia finished first and will face Ghana in the Round of 16. Portugal ended second. They will now play Croatia in the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, DR Congo secured one of the best third-place spots after beating Uzbekistan. As a result, South Korea was eliminated.

Portugal Face a Tougher Road

Portugal reached the knockout stage. However, finishing second means a harder path. Ronaldo could not score against Colombia. Even so, Portugal still has enough quality to challenge for the title.

Meanwhile, Colombia looked sharp in every area. They defended well and attacked with confidence. In addition, they created more chances throughout the match.
