Senegal Cause Problems for France in the First Half

Before the match, many expected France to dominate thanks to their star-studded attack. Didier Deschamps started Mbappe alongside Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Desire Doue. However, Senegal had different plans.

Senegal started the game with confidence. They did not sit back and defend. Instead, they pressed high up the pitch. As a result, they created several dangerous counterattacks.

France controlled possession during the first half. However, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Mbappe looked unusually quiet and found it difficult to break through Senegal’s disciplined defense.

In contrast, Senegal produced the better chances.

In the 25th minute, Nicolas Jackson nearly stunned the French supporters. The striker burst forward on a fast counterattack and fired a powerful effort that crashed against the post.

A few minutes later, Ismaila Sarr also came close. However, his shot flew over the crossbar from a promising position.

As the first half ended, France were relieved not to be trailing. Senegal had shown that they were more than capable of challenging one of the tournament favorites.

France Increase the Pressure After the Break

The second half looked very different.

France returned from the dressing room with greater intensity and urgency. Their passing became quicker, and their attacking movements improved significantly.

The breakthrough came in the 66th minute. Michael Olise played an excellent through ball. Mbappe timed his run perfectly. He beat the offside trap and calmly scored past Edouard Mendy.

Despite the growing pressure, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy continued to impress. The experienced shot-stopper made several important saves to keep his team level.

First, he denied Olise in a one-on-one situation. Shortly afterward, he produced another strong stop to prevent Mbappe from opening the scoring.

Nevertheless, France continued pushing forward. Eventually, their persistence paid off.

Mbappe Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute.

Michael Olise delivered a perfectly weighted through ball behind Senegal’s defensive line. Mbappe timed his run brilliantly, beat the offside trap, and calmly finished past Mendy.

The goal immediately changed the momentum of the match.

France suddenly looked more relaxed and confident. Meanwhile, Senegal were forced to take greater risks in search of an equalizer.

Mbappe’s opener also highlighted his ability to deliver in the biggest moments. Throughout his career, the French superstar has repeatedly stepped up when his national team needed inspiration.

This match was no exception.

Bradley Barcola Doubles France’s Advantage

With Senegal pushing forward, more space appeared at the back.

France took full advantage in the 82nd minute.

Bradley Barcola, who had entered the match full of energy, made a smart run behind the defense. He then produced a delicate finish over Mendy to double France’s lead.

At 2-0, the contest appeared finished.

France looked set to secure a comfortable victory, while Senegal faced an uphill battle with only minutes remaining.

However, the drama was not over yet.

Ibrahim Mbaye Gives Senegal Hope

Deep into stoppage time, Senegal found a way back into the game.

Eighteen-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye scored in the 95th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The young forward reacted quickly inside the penalty area and finished confidently.

His goal sparked celebrations among Senegal supporters and briefly created hope of an unlikely comeback.

For a moment, France appeared nervous.

Yet those fears lasted only a few seconds.

Mbappe Seals the Win with a Stunning Strike

Senegal had little time to celebrate. France attacked again right after the restart. Mbappe received the ball outside the box. He then fired a stunning shot from nearly 30 meters. The ball flew into the net and sealed the victory.

The powerful effort flew past Mendy and into the net. It was a world-class finish and one of the standout goals of the tournament so far. The strike restored France’s two-goal advantage and secured a deserved 3-1 victory.

More importantly, it completed Mbappe’s brace and crowned an outstanding individual performance.

Mbappe Once Again Leads Les Bleus

Mbappe had a quiet first half. In fact, Senegal managed to limit his influence for long periods. However, great players often need only one moment.

The French captain became much more involved after the break. His movement improved, and he looked far more dangerous.

As a result, he scored twice and changed the game. Once again, Mbappe proved why he remains the leader of the French national team. He also strengthened his position among the favorites to win the Golden Boot at World Cup 2026.

What the Result Means for Group I

This victory gives France an ideal start in Group I. The three points put Les Bleus in a strong position ahead of their upcoming matches. Furthermore, the result will boost confidence throughout the squad.

However, Didier Deschamps will still want improvements. France looked uncomfortable at times, especially during the first half. Meanwhile, Senegal can take positives from their performance.

Although they lost, they competed well against one of the strongest teams in the tournament. In addition, they created several good chances and showed plenty of determination.

If they maintain this level, they can still fight for a place in the knockout stage.
