Dark Fae is one of the most exciting traits in TFT Set 18. Unlike many other traits, it does not give immediate combat power. Instead, it focuses on building rewards over time.
The trait uses a special resource called Essence. You earn it by getting takedowns and losing rounds. Then, you can choose to cash out or keep saving for a bigger jackpot.
However, waiting always comes with risk. Cash out too early, and your reward may be too small. On the other hand, waiting too long could eliminate you before collecting anything.
Because of this, Dark Fae rewards smart decisions instead of pure luck.

How Dark Fae Works
Dark Fae is built around controlled losing streaks. Your goal is not to lose every fight badly. Instead, you want close losses.
A strong enough board can still defeat one or two enemy units. Those takedowns give extra Essence. At the same time, you keep your losing streak alive.
The more Dark Fae champions you play, the faster you collect Essence. Therefore, reaching higher trait levels lets you cash out much sooner.
This creates an interesting choice every game. Do you keep saving, or do you take the reward now?
Dark Fae Champions
Dark Fae has five main champions. They cost between one and four gold. Lux is a special five-cost Divine unit. When she appears as Dark Fae, she counts as two units for the trait.

Camille (1 Gold)
Camille is your early frontline. She deals physical damage and gains a shield after casting.
She is not your main carry. However, she helps your team survive longer during the first stages.
Caitlyn (2 Gold)
Caitlyn is the main early damage dealer.
Every third attack becomes a powerful shot. It deals heavy physical damage. She can often finish low-health enemies, even during losing rounds.
That makes her an excellent item holder early in the game.
Elise (2 Gold)
Elise is the team’s main tank. She transforms into spider form after casting. She gains Health, heals herself, and attacks faster over time.
Because of this, Elise can protect your backline throughout the early and mid game.

Cassiopeia (3 Gold)
Cassiopeia becomes your first magic carry.
Her poison spreads to multiple enemies. It also stacks over time. As a result, she deals steady damage and helps secure more takedowns.
She can also hold Morgana’s items until late game.
Morgana (4 Gold)
Morgana is the team’s main late-game carry.
Her spell curses several enemies. It also creates a large damage zone. Enemies inside the area take continuous magic damage.
She becomes much stronger in long team fights.
Dark Fae Lux (5 Gold)
Dark Fae Lux is one of the strongest units for this trait.
She counts as two Dark Fae champions. This makes the highest breakpoint much easier to reach.
Her laser deals heavy magic damage. It also lowers enemy Armor and Magic Resist. In addition, allied Dark Fae units gain Mana whenever she casts.

Dark Fae Trait Breakpoints
Dark Fae has four activation levels.
- 3 Dark Fae: 1 Essence per takedown and 18 per loss.
- 4 Dark Fae: 2 Essence per takedown and 22 per loss.
- 5 Dark Fae: 2 Essence per takedown and 35 per loss.
- 7 Dark Fae: 7 Essence per takedown and 70 per loss.
Reaching seven units is not easy. You usually need Dark Fae Lux, a Dark Fae Emblem, or another trait bonus.
Best Strategy
Early Game
First, activate three Dark Fae champions.
Then, try to keep a losing streak.
However, avoid losing without taking any kills. Instead, aim for close losses.
Meanwhile, place your physical items on Caitlyn.

Mid Game
Next, add Cassiopeia at Level 6 or 7.
As a result, your damage increases.
At the same time, you gain more Essence every round.
Meanwhile, keep watching your Health. If necessary, cash out before your Health becomes too low.
After Cashing Out
Once you claim your reward, spend it immediately.
First, level up.
Next, roll for stronger champions.
Then, finish your core items.
Otherwise, your weak board may lose too many rounds.
Late Game
Finally, build around Morgana. Then, search for Dark Fae Lux.
Besides increasing your damage, Lux also helps unlock the final breakpoint.
However, stay flexible. If your jackpot gives several legendary units, switching to another endgame composition may be the stronger play.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Dark Fae is one of the most rewarding traits in TFT Set 18. Although the trait requires patience, it offers huge rewards.
Therefore, players must balance Health, economy, and timing.
In the end, those who manage all three well can turn a losing streak into a powerful comeback. As a result, Dark Fae becomes one of the most satisfying traits to master in Set 18.
