Kha Y Tran The bot lane Mage meta in League of Legends has become a hot topic after MSI 2026. Champions like Ziggs are appearing more often in bot lane. This role has long been dominated by traditional marksmen.
As a result, many players are worried about the future of ADCs. Some also believe Riot Games may soon push Mages out of bot lane. However, Riot sees the situation differently.
According to Riot Phroxzon, Mages are not the main problem. In fact, Riot wants different champion classes to remain viable in bot lane.
Instead, Riot is worried about one specific strategy. It involves self-sufficient bot lane Mages and Supports who roam very early.
This strategy can change the early game. More importantly, it can give the roaming Support too much freedom. At the same time, traditional ADCs can struggle to respond.

Riot Does Not Want to Remove Mages From Bot Lane
For years, bot lane has been closely linked with marksmen. Champions like Jinx, Kai’Sa, Ezreal, and Aphelios often fill this role. These champions usually need time to become strong. They also need items before they can deal huge damage.
However, bot lane has never belonged only to ADCs. Mages such as Ziggs offer a different style. For example, Ziggs can clear waves very quickly. He can also poke enemies from a safe distance. Moreover, he can put heavy pressure on enemy towers.
After MSI 2026, these strengths became more important. Therefore, Mage bot picks started to attract more attention. Naturally, some players expected Riot to react with nerfs.
However, Riot does not want to remove Mages from the role. According to Phroxzon, different champion classes can make bot lane more diverse. Therefore, Riot does not want every team to use a traditional ADC.
In short, Mage bot itself is not the real problem.
The Mage Bot Meta Is Starting to Adjust
There is another reason Riot has avoided major nerfs. The meta is already starting to change naturally. New strategies often look very strong at first. Players may not know how to counter them. As a result, these strategies can quickly become popular.
However, popularity does not always mean something is overpowered. Players need time to learn.
After around two or three weeks, players started finding better answers to Mage bot picks. They improved their champion choices. They also changed how they played the lane.
As a result, the meta started to become more stable. This matters to Riot.
If players can counter a strategy by adapting, Riot may not need to nerf it immediately. Otherwise, balance changes could kill a new playstyle too quickly.
Therefore, Riot appears willing to give the meta more time.
Riot Is Fine With Double-Ranged Bot Lanes
Interestingly, Riot is not against two ranged champions playing together in bot lane. The company is even open to two Mages playing together.
However, there is one key condition. Both players should take part in the laning phase.
For example, they should trade with opponents. They should also manage waves and fight for lane control. If both players are active in lane, Riot sees the setup as fair. Therefore, the problem is not about having an ADC or a Mage.
Instead, problems appear when one champion becomes too independent. In that situation, the Support no longer needs to stay in lane.
This is where Support roaming becomes important.
Early Support Roaming Is Riot’s Real Concern
A self-sufficient Mage can completely change the bot lane. Ziggs is a clear example. He has strong wave clear. He also has long-range abilities. Therefore, he can farm without taking many risks. Ziggs can stay far away from his opponents. Then, he can quickly clear a wave and move back to safety.
As a result, his Support gets more freedom. The Support no longer needs to protect the bot laner all the time. Instead, they can leave the lane early. They can move toward mid lane. They can also help the jungler or control the river. In addition, they can create pressure around early objectives.
Sometimes, they can even move toward top lane. Meanwhile, Ziggs continues farming safely. Therefore, the team gets benefits in two areas at once. Ziggs keeps collecting gold and experience. At the same time, the Support creates pressure elsewhere.
This is the part Riot finds more concerning.
Traditional ADCs Can Struggle
This strategy can be difficult for traditional marksmen. Most ADCs need time to scale. They become much stronger after buying several items. However, they are often weak early in the game.
Therefore, ADCs usually need help from their Support. They need protection to farm safely. They may also need help controlling the wave. Early roaming can break this system.
For example, one Support may leave bot lane. The enemy Support then has two choices. First, they can follow the roaming Support. However, their ADC will then be alone. Second, they can stay in bot lane. However, their team may lose pressure around mid lane or the river. Both options can create problems.
In some cases, an ADC may even have to survive a 1v2 lane. This is very difficult for many traditional marksmen. They often lack mobility and defensive tools early in the game. Therefore, Riot does not see Ziggs as the only problem.
Instead, the bigger concern is simple. Some Mages allow their Supports to leave bot lane too easily.
Riot Could Target Support Roaming Instead
This could affect future League of Legends updates. Riot may not need to nerf every bot lane Mage. Instead, the balance team could make early roaming more costly.
For example, Riot could give Supports more reasons to stay in bot lane. It could also create bigger risks for leaving the lane too early. This approach could solve two problems at once.
First, Mages could remain useful in bot lane. Therefore, players would still have more strategic options. At the same time, Supports could not roam across the map without giving something up.
As a result, bot lane could remain diverse without making early roaming too strong.
Riot Still Wants to Help ADCs
Meanwhile, Riot is also looking at the ADC experience. Some important ADC tools may receive buffs. These include Berserker’s Greaves and Fleet Footwork. This is another key part of Riot’s approach. Riot does not need to nerf Mages to help marksmen.
Instead, the company can make ADCs stronger directly. For example, marksmen could receive better tools for the laning phase. They could also reach important power spikes more smoothly.
As a result, traditional ADCs could compete with Mage bot picks more effectively. At the same time, Riot could keep different playstyles viable.
What Comes Next for the Bot Lane Meta?
Riot’s comments suggest that the bot lane Mage meta will not disappear soon. Ziggs and similar champions can still have a place in bot lane.
In fact, Riot appears comfortable with a diverse meta. Mages and marksmen can both play the role. However, Riot also has a clear limit.
A champion should not be able to control bot lane alone with almost no risk. If that happens, the Support becomes free to influence the whole map. That can create an unfair advantage.
Therefore, the main debate may not be about ADCs versus Mages. Instead, Riot is asking a different question. How independent should a bot laner be?
The answer could shape future balance changes.
Conclusion: Mages Are Not Riot’s Main Problem
Riot Games has made its position clear. Mages in bot lane are not automatically bad for League of Legends. The company wants different champion classes to remain viable. Therefore, Ziggs and other Mages do not need to disappear.
Instead, Riot is more worried about early Support roaming. Some Mages can safely farm without much help. As a result, their Supports can leave bot lane very early. They can then pressure mid lane, help the jungler, or fight for objectives. Meanwhile, the Mage continues farming safely. Traditional ADCs may struggle to match this strategy.
Therefore, future changes could focus on Support roaming rather than Mage bot picks. Riot may also continue to improve marksmen through items, runes, or other buffs. Ultimately, Riot does not want bot lane to belong to only one champion class.
Instead, the goal is a more diverse meta. Mages and ADCs should both have a place. However, every strategy should have a clear cost.
If Riot can find that balance, Mages and marksmen can coexist in bot lane without either side taking over the game.
