The United States kept its FIFA World Cup 2026 dream alive with a 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina. The match took place at Levi’s Stadium. Folarin Balogun scored before halftime. Later, he received a red card. Even so, the USA defended well with 10 men. Malik Tillman then sealed the win with a brilliant free kick.
As a result, the Americans reached the Round of 16. They will now face Belgium in a rematch of their famous meeting at the 2014 World Cup.

USA grow stronger after a slow start
Both teams started carefully. Neither side wanted to make an early mistake.
Bosnia created the first good chances. Ermedin Demirović tested goalkeeper Matt Freese twice. However, Freese stayed calm and made two important saves.
After that, the USA began to control possession. The hosts pressed higher and forced Bosnia into mistakes. As a result, they spent more time in the attacking half.
In the 30th minute, Balogun thought he had scored. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.
Still, the USA kept pushing forward.
Balogun breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough came just before halftime. Tim Ream won the ball in midfield. Then, Malik Tillman played a smart pass into the box. Balogun made a good run and finished through the goalkeeper’s legs.
Therefore, the USA took a deserved 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Balogun nearly scored again. His close-range effort hit the crossbar instead.
Even so, the home team entered halftime with confidence.

Bosnia push forward after the break
Bosnia returned with more energy in the second half.
They enjoyed more possession and attacked more often. However, the American defense stayed organized. Because of that, Bosnia created very few clear chances.
Then the match changed completely.
Balogun sees red
In the 64th minute, the referee reviewed a challenge using VAR. After watching the replay, he showed Balogun a straight red card. The striker was sent off for a dangerous tackle. As a result, the USA had to play with only 10 men.

Naturally, Bosnia pushed forward. They hoped to use the extra player. However, Mauricio Pochettino quickly changed his tactics.
That decision made a big difference.
USA defend with great discipline
The Americans stayed compact after the red card. Every player worked hard without the ball. The defenders cleared crosses. The midfield closed passing lanes. Meanwhile, Matt Freese remained confident in goal.
Bosnia had more possession. Even so, they rarely threatened the American goal. In the 79th minute, Christian Pulisic found the net. However, VAR ruled the goal offside.
The USA kept fighting.
Tillman scores a stunning free kick
Three minutes later, the hosts finally secured the victory. Malik Tillman stepped up for a free kick from about 20 meters.
He struck the ball low and hard. The shot bent around the wall and beat Nikola Vasilj. Although the goalkeeper got a hand on it, he could not keep it out. The goal made it 2-0.
Soon after, the final whistle confirmed another famous World Cup victory for the United States.

Pulisic praises the team’s spirit
After the match, Christian Pulisic praised his teammates. He said the red card made the game much harder. However, the team stayed united and never lost belief. Pochettino also praised his players.
The coach said everyone stayed calm under pressure. He added that the team deserved to reach the next round.
Meanwhile, Tillman revealed he had changed his right boot before taking the winning free kick. Fortunately, the change worked perfectly.

Balogun’s red card creates a problem
Balogun scored his third goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, his red card means he will miss the Round of 16.
That is a big loss for the USA. Even so, the team proved against Bosnia that it can still compete without relying on one player.
Belgium await in the Round of 16
The victory over Bosnia means more than just qualification. It also gives the USA another chance to face Belgium on the World Cup stage.
The two teams last met in the 2014 Round of 16. Belgium won 2-1 after extra time despite Tim Howard making 16 saves. Now, the Americans have a chance for revenge.
This time, they will enjoy home support and strong momentum. If they defend with the same discipline and play with the same confidence, they could challenge Belgium and continue their memorable FIFA World Cup 2026 journey.
