Ecuador Create the Better Chances in the First Half
The match began cautiously. Both teams understood the importance of avoiding mistakes in their opening game.
However, Ecuador looked more dangerous in the early stages. In the 11th minute, captain Enner Valencia received a cross inside the box. He struck the ball first time, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
A few minutes later, Ecuador came close again. John Yeboah tried his luck from long range. His powerful shot beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar.
The South American side continued to push forward. Then, in the 30th minute, Alan Minda curled a beautiful effort toward the top corner. Once again, the woodwork denied Ecuador.
Although Ecuador controlled many attacking moments, they could not find the breakthrough.
Ivory Coast Stay Patient and Fight Back
While Ecuador enjoyed more chances, Ivory Coast remained calm. The African side relied on quick transitions and attacks down the wings.
Their best chance of the first half came in the 16th minute. Franck Kessié delivered an excellent pass into the attacking area. Bazoumana Toure connected well with the ball, but his effort drifted just wide of the post.
As the game progressed, Ivory Coast grew into the contest. Their physical strength and speed helped them challenge Ecuador’s defense.
Nevertheless, both teams struggled to create clear opportunities before halftime. As a result, the first half ended 0-0.
The Second Half Remains Closely Contested
After the break, the game became more open. Both teams pushed forward in search of the opening goal.
In the 52nd minute, Ivory Coast nearly took the lead. Elye Wahi found space inside the penalty area and fired a strong shot. However, the ball struck the crossbar and bounced away.
Meanwhile, Ecuador continued to threaten. Pedro Vite and Gonzalo Plata both tested the Ivory Coast defense. However, goalkeeper Yahia Fofana remained alert and made several important interventions.
As time passed, the match became increasingly intense. Both sides knew a single goal could decide the outcome.
Amad Diallo Changes the Game
The turning point arrived in the second half when Ivory Coast introduced Amad Diallo.
The Manchester United winger entered the match in the 56th minute. Immediately, he brought more energy and creativity to the attack.
His pace stretched Ecuador’s defense. In addition, his movement created more space for his teammates.
As a result, Ivory Coast looked more dangerous whenever they attacked. The Elephants began to believe they could steal a late winner.
Meanwhile, Ecuador started to lose some of the momentum they had enjoyed earlier in the match.
Late Drama Seals All Three Points
For much of the second half, a draw appeared to be the most likely result.
However, football often produces dramatic endings.
In the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo drove forward from the right flank. The defender carried the ball into the penalty area before delivering a precise pass across goal.
Amad Diallo timed his run perfectly. He met the ball with a first-time finish and sent it into the net.
The stadium erupted as Ivory Coast celebrated.
It was a simple move, but it arrived at the perfect moment. More importantly, it secured a historic victory for the African nation.
Ecuador tried to respond during stoppage time. However, Ivory Coast defended with discipline and protected their lead until the final whistle.
A Historic Night for Ivory Coast
This victory means far more than three points.
Before this match, Ivory Coast had never beaten a South American opponent at the FIFA World Cup. Therefore, the win represents a major milestone in the country’s football history.
In addition, it rewards a disciplined and determined performance. The Elephants absorbed pressure, stayed organized, and took their chance when it arrived.
Although Ecuador hit the crossbar twice and created several good opportunities, they could not convert those chances into goals.
Ivory Coast, on the other hand, proved more clinical when it mattered most.
Group E Race Becomes More Interesting
The result has added extra excitement to Group E.
Germany remain the favorites to finish first. However, the battle for second place now looks wide open.
Ivory Coast hold an early advantage after securing all three points. Consequently, they will enter their next match with confidence.
Meanwhile, Ecuador face increased pressure. They must bounce back quickly if they want to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
With several matches still to play, the group remains competitive. Nevertheless, this victory could become one of the key moments of Ivory Coast’s World Cup campaign.
