Kha Y Tran Chau Thoi Pagoda sits entirely on the peak of Chau Thoi Mountain in Di An City. Thanks to its high elevation and peaceful setting, the pagoda attracts many pilgrims and tourists every year. Moreover, locals view this place as one of the most sacred spiritual landmarks in Southeast Vietnam.

History of Chau Thoi Pagoda
Zen Master Khanh Long founded Chau Thoi Pagoda in 1612. At first, he built a small hermitage on the mountain to practice meditation. Later, people named this hermitage Hoi Son Pagoda.
Over time, locals renamed the temple Chau Thoi Pagoda, following the name of the mountain. Throughout history, the pagoda played an important role in the region.
During the resistance wars against the French and the Americans, local fighters used the mountain terrain to hide revolutionary activities. As a result, the pagoda became a secret base for the resistance movement.
In 1989, the Vietnamese government officially recognized Chau Thoi Pagoda as a National Scenic and Historical Relic.

Geographic Location
Chau Thoi Pagoda stands on Chau Thoi Mountain in Binh An Ward, Di An City. The site lies about 25 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and 20 km west of Thu Dau Mot City.
In addition, the pagoda sits near the Dong Nai River and along a major route connecting Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong. Therefore, visitors can reach the pagoda easily from many nearby provinces.

Unique Architecture
Chau Thoi Pagoda combines ancient and modern architectural styles in a harmonious way. Artisans decorated the temple roofs with colorful ceramic fragments, creating a striking visual effect.
On the main roof, craftsmen sculpted nine dragons facing different directions. These dragons symbolize protection and good fortune.
Moreover, the pagoda houses a 22.5-meter-tall Avalokitesvara (Quan The Am) statue, which ranks among the largest Buddha statues in Binh Duong.
Currently, the pagoda preserves 55 valuable artifacts. These include three ancient stone Buddha statues and a wooden Quan Am statue that is more than 100 years old.

1. The Sacred Guardian Stone
At the 170th step leading up the mountain, a large stone blocks the stairway. In 1971, workers tried many ways to move or break the stone, but all attempts failed.
Because of this, locals believe the stone represents a sacred spirit known as Ong Ta. The monks decided to keep the stone in place and carved the words “Tà Lão Trung Sơn,” which means “The Mountain Guardian Spirit.” Today, many visitors stop here to offer incense and pray.
2. The Wild Monkey Troop
For many years, a troop of wild monkeys has lived on Chau Thoi Mountain. These monkeys often appear around the pagoda grounds. As a result, visitors can experience a rare combination of spiritual atmosphere and wildlife in one place.
Important Notes for Visitors
Since Chau Thoi Pagoda is a sacred site, visitors should follow several important rules:
- Wear modest clothing and avoid revealing outfits
- Offer only vegetarian items such as flowers, fruits, and vegan food
- Arrange offerings neatly and follow the monks’ instructions

Visiting Information
Visitors can reach the pagoda in two ways. First, they can climb 220 stone steps to enjoy the mountain scenery. Alternatively, they can use the paved road for motorbikes and cars.
From the 82-meter-high peak, visitors can see panoramic views of Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Nai. If you visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you can enjoy stunning sunrise or sunset views across the region.
