TFT 18.1 is now live. The update starts the new Mystical Grove set and brings many big changes to Teamfight Tactics. However, this is not just a normal balance patch. Riot Games has changed several core parts of TFT. The game now runs on Unreal Engine. In addition, the new Spirit mechanic adds another layer of strategy.
The Carousel is also back. Meanwhile, Riot has changed many Augments and Artifacts. Because of this, players may need to learn new ways to build teams and manage gold.
Most of all, Spirits could shake up the TFT 18.1 meta. Players who learn the new system early may have a big edge in ranked games.

TFT 18.1 Moves to Unreal Engine
One of the biggest changes in TFT 18.1 happens behind the scenes. Teamfight Tactics is moving from its old Hextech engine to Unreal Engine. This is a major step for the future of the game. The new engine should give Riot more room to improve TFT. For example, it may allow better graphics and effects in future updates.
However, the move also brings some short-term problems.
First, Patch 18.1 has a larger download size. Players need to download many new game files. Also, loading times may be longer at first. The game needs time to optimize the new files. The minimap and tactical ping system are also missing for now. Riot is working on a new ping system that will work without the minimap.
In addition, players cannot watch their friends’ games for now. Riot plans to bring this feature back in a later update. So, there may be a few issues at first. Still, Unreal Engine could bring major benefits in the future.

Mystical Grove Starts a New TFT Era
The new Mystical Grove set also arrives with TFT 18.1. This set takes players into a magical forest. It is home to nature guardians, forest monsters, woodland groups, and even a Yeti.
However, the biggest feature is the new Spirit mechanic. Spirits come in seven types. These are Champion, Combat, Hybrid, Shop, Gold/XP, Risk, and Item. Each type has its own color and icon. Therefore, players can quickly see what kind of Spirit has appeared.
Players can only buy Spirits during the planning phase. After you buy one, it flies away. Then, the champion behind it is shown.
This sounds simple. However, it could have a big effect on how players use the shop.

Spirits Could Shake Up the TFT 18.1 Meta
Spirits do not appear at random times. A new Spirit appears after every two shop refreshes. Because of this, rerolling now has another purpose. Before, players mainly refreshed the shop to find champions. Now, each refresh also brings them closer to another Spirit. This creates a new choice.
Should you save your gold? Should you level up? Or should you reroll to reach the next Spirit? That choice becomes even more important later in the game. From Stage 5 onward, one of every two Spirit appearances is sure to be a Combat Spirit. Therefore, Spirits can give players extra power during key late-game fights.
As a result, gold management could become more important in TFT 18.1. Players cannot simply follow the same plan every game. Instead, they may need to change their plan based on the Spirits they find. The Carousel is also back in Mystical Grove.
This time, Carousels can offer more surprises. For example, they may have more champions than usual. Expensive champions may also appear more often.
Therefore, each match can develop in a very different way.

Targeting Is Better After Crowd Control
Riot has also changed an important combat rule. In older versions, a champion could change its target after being stunned or knocked up. It would often attack the closest enemy instead. This could cause problems for units that reached the enemy backline. After being hit by crowd control, they could suddenly stop attacking the enemy carry.
That changes in TFT 18.1.
Now, a unit will return to its first target after the crowd control ends. As a result, positioning should feel more reliable. Players can also plan attacks on enemy carries with more confidence. PvE loot has received a useful change as well.
If players miss loot at Stage 4-7 or later PvE rounds, the rewards are not lost. Instead, they move to the next PvE round.
Therefore, players have less risk of losing useful items by mistake.

Opening Encounters Get Major Changes
Opening Encounters have also been updated. Riot wants to reduce some of the extreme luck at the start of games. Because of this, three new options have been added. They include a Complete Item Package, Reroll Package, and Item Forge.
At the same time, several old options have been removed. These include Treasure Subscription, Artifact Item Package, and Start Reroll. The game will still have random events. However, the early game may now feel more stable.
As a result, players should have more time to build a clear plan.
Augments Receive Big Updates in TFT 18.1
Augments are another major part of TFT Patch 18.1. Riot has removed some old Augments. At the same time, several others have received new effects or balance changes.
Birthday Reunion, for example, has been reworked. It now gives players a random two-star 2-cost champion. At Level 6, players also get a random item component. Then, at Level 9, they receive a random two-star 5-cost champion.
Optimal Team Composition has also changed. It now gives 10 free shop refreshes. In addition, players get three more free refreshes and a Champion Duplicator when they reach Level 9. Other Augments have also received balance changes.
Therefore, players should check their favorite Augments before choosing them. An Augment that was strong before may work very differently in TFT 18.1.
Artifacts Could Change the New Meta
Artifacts also receive many changes in TFT 18.1.
First, two Artifacts are back. They are Blighting Jewel and Manazane. Their return could create new item builds. In addition, some champions may become much stronger with these items. Several other Artifacts have changed too.
For example, Fishbones now gives +2 Attack Range. However, its AD and AP bonus drops from 50% to 25%. Silvermere Dawn now gives 30% Omnivamp. On the other hand, it has lower Attack Damage and defensive stats.
Statikk Shiv can now hit six targets instead of four. However, it deals less base damage. It also has lower AP scaling and Attack Speed.
Meanwhile, Rapid Firecannon’s Attack Speed drops from 65% to 55%. Because of these changes, old item plans may no longer be the best choice.
Finally, three Artifacts are gone: Death’s Defiance, The Indomitable, and Sniper’s Focus.
TFT 18.1 Changes System Requirements
The move to Unreal Engine also changes the system requirements. On mobile, TFT 18.1 no longer supports iOS devices with only 2GB of RAM. Also, Android devices with 2GB or 3GB of RAM are no longer supported.
According to the patch information, these devices make up only a small part of the player base. Therefore, Riot can focus more on improving the game for newer devices. PC players also need to meet new requirements.
Players need Windows 10 Version 19041 or later. Their graphics hardware must also support DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.
So, players with older devices should check their hardware before starting the new set.
TFT 18.1 Could Create a New Meta
Overall, TFT 18.1 is a major update for Teamfight Tactics.
First, Unreal Engine creates a new base for the game’s future. Meanwhile, Mystical Grove brings a fresh theme and many gameplay changes. More importantly, Spirits add a new layer of strategy. Players now have more choices when using their gold. They must decide when to save, level up, or reroll. In addition, they need to think about when the next Spirit will appear.
Augments and Artifacts have also changed. The return of the Carousel adds even more options.
Because of this, the TFT 18.1 meta could change very quickly. Strong teams from the first few days may not stay on top for long. Players will soon find new Spirit combos, strong Artifact users, and better ways to manage their gold.
Therefore, being flexible will be key. Mystical Grove is not just another TFT set. It marks a new chapter for the game. With Unreal Engine, Spirits, new Augments, and major Artifact changes, TFT 18.1 gives players many new things to learn.
For now, one thing is clear: players who understand Spirits early could have a major advantage in the new TFT 18.1 meta.
