Colombia Enter the Knockout Stage in Great Form
Colombia entered the knockout stage in excellent form. They finished first in Group K. The team stayed unbeaten throughout the group stage. They also conceded only one goal in three matches. Because of that strong record, many fans now see Colombia as one of the dark horses of the tournament.
James Rodríguez continued to lead the attack. The experienced midfielder created 10 chances during the group stage. Only Mohamed Salah created more.
Meanwhile, Ghana reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-place teams. They defended well throughout the group stage. They also earned a valuable draw against England. Therefore, they believed they could surprise Colombia.
The match also had extra meaning for Carlos Queiroz. The Ghana coach managed Colombia between 2019 and 2020.

After conceding, Ghana pushed forward. However, Colombia stayed organized. The South American side pressed high and closed every passing lane. As a result, Ghana found it difficult to build attacks.
Colombia also won most midfield battles. Their defenders stopped every dangerous move before it reached the penalty area.
The statistics showed Colombia’s control. Ghana did not record a single touch inside Colombia’s penalty area during the first half.

Colombia Keep Pushing After the Break
The second half followed the same pattern. Colombia stayed on the front foot. Ghana spent long periods defending near their own goal.
In the 56th minute, Luis Díaz thought he had doubled the lead. However, the goal was ruled out for offside. Even so, Colombia never slowed down.
James Rodríguez controlled the tempo in midfield. At the same time, Juan Fernando Quintero and Luis Díaz created more openings.
Several shots missed the target by only a few inches. Others were blocked by Ghana’s defenders.

Ati-Zigi Produces Several Big Saves
Lawrence Ati-Zigi was Ghana’s best player. The goalkeeper made several outstanding saves in the second half. He denied Johan Mojica, Gustavo Puerta, and other Colombian attackers. His performance kept Ghana in the match until the final minutes.
However, Ghana’s attack offered very little. The team struggled to keep possession. They also failed to create clear chances. Colombia’s defenders stayed calm and cleared every dangerous ball.
As time ran down, Ghana pushed more players forward. Even so, Colombia defended well and protected their lead.

Colombia Earn a Deserved Victory
The final score was only 1-0. However, Colombia deserved the win. They controlled possession for most of the match. They also created more chances and defended with confidence.
Every part of the team performed well. The midfield controlled the game. The defense stayed solid. The attack continued to ask questions of Ghana’s back line.
Because of that balance, Colombia now look like a serious contender in the tournament.
Switzerland Await in the Round of 16
The victory sends Colombia into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
Their next opponent will be Switzerland. The Swiss team also impressed after beating Algeria 2-0.
Therefore, the next match should be one of the most exciting games of the round.
Colombia will take confidence from this performance. James Rodríguez continues to lead the team. Jhon Arias scored another important goal. In addition, Luis Díaz remained dangerous throughout the match.
Although Ghana are out, they can still be proud of their effort. Lawrence Ati-Zigi delivered an excellent performance in goal. However, the lack of attacking quality proved costly.
Final Thoughts
